The children can work together to sort the jelly beans. Watch the children concentrate as they do the process, work together, help each other, and talk to each other as they go along.
When all the cups are empty look at the tray with beautifully coloured sorted jelly beans.
Let the children taste the different jelly beans to see if the different colour jelly beans taste different.
Then let the children choose one color of jelly bean from the tray to put back into their cups
Then let the children add water to their cup of jelly beans.
The children must stir the jelly beans around in the water.
As the children stir the jelly beans around in the water ask them "What do you think will happen if we leave the jelly beans in the water?"
The children may respond by saying that the water might change color,
The children will notice that after a minute or two of stirring, the jelly beans still look the same
Let the children continue to stir and they will notice that the water will start to change slightly in colour
Tell the children to leave their cups on the shelf whilst they play or do work for a few hours.
Then return observe what has happened to their water
The children will notice that the water has changed colour and the jelly beans are beginning to turn white
Then leave the jelly beans in the water overnight
Return the next day and observe the jelly beans.
The jelly beans should be completely white and the water should be the colour of the jelly beans.
Now place a different colour jelly bean in to the coloured water.
Leave it over night and see if the water changed to a different colour
