Story Time

There was an evil king in Egypt. He wanted his people to be the greatest and the mightiest nation. He noticed that there were a lot of Jewish children. He had fears that Jews would take over Egypt one day... He gave an order saying, "Every son that is born a Jew has to be cast into the river"

There was a baby boy born in a Jewish family. The mother whose name was Yocheved was hiding the child for three months. When she could not hide her son any longer she put him in a basket in the reeds in the Nile River. His sister, Miriam, stayed to watch the basket to see what would happen to him.

The daughter of Pharaoh, Batya, came down to wash herself at the river. When she saw the basket, she reached for it. The baby was crying. She knew that it was one of Jewish children, but she wanted to keep him. The sister, Miriam, came to her and suggested a nurse. It was the child's mother... Yocheved got to have her baby back until he was weaned. She was able to teach him about Hashem and the Jewish ways. When it was time, she took him back to the Pharaoh's daughter, Batya.

The new mother Batya named the child Moses. She was raising Moses as her own son. He was educated, he was a military leader, but in his heart Moses was Jewish. One day, Moses went out to his people and he looked at how hard they had to work for the Egyptians. Moses saw a mean taskmaster beating a Jew. Moses slew the Egyptian and hid him in sand. The Jewish people did not accept this and told Pharaoh. Pharaoh was looking for Moses to deal with him... Moses ran away to the desert and he came to the land of Midian.

One day Moses was sitting by the well, when seven daughters of Yitro came to give water to their sheep. Then the shepherds came. They were mean to the daughters and they scared away the sheep. Moses helped the women: he drove away the troublemakers and helped to water the flock. Yitro was very pleased with Moses. He asked him to stay with them to take care of the flock. Moses married Yitro's daughter Zipporah and they had a son. One day Moses came to the mountain. He saw the bush in flames, but it did not burn. Moses was very curious, he came closer...Hashem’s voice was heard. Take off your shoes you are standing on holy ground. Hashem told Moses that he must go with his brother Aaron to Pharaoh to free the Jewish people.

Moses and his brother Aaron came to the Pharaoh, "You've been mean and cruel to my people. Let my people go, as Hashem has commanded." Pharaoh did not want to let the Jewish people go. Then Hashem sent a plague. Pharaoh promised to release the Jewish people. Every time the plague stopped Pharaoh changed his mind. Moses asked ten times and Hashem sent ten plagues. Finally after the tenth plague, Pharaoh said, "Get out of my land, both you and the Jewish people." All the Jewish people packed up their belongings and left Egypt.

There bread did not have time to rise so they ate unleavened bread – matzah. When they came to the Yam Suf Hashem said to Moses, "Lift up you rod, and stretch your hand over the sea, and divide it: and the Jewish people walked on the dry ground in the middle of the sea." The Egyptians were following the Jewish people. When all the Jewish people crossed the Yam Suf Hashem told Moses to stretch his hand over the sea and the water came crashing down. The Egyptians drowned. Then Moses and the Jewish people sang and danced to thank Hashem for this miracle.
